We first took the Chapter 14 Quiz today, then followed that with a further examination of the impact of slavery on American politics and society through the points of view expressed in two historical sources, a set of images of John Brown, and a clip of historians debating the legacy of slavery. This all leads us up to the Civil War tomorrow! Also, Chapter 15 is due tomorrow.
Don't forget, your second scored discussion will be Thursday! The reading selection is loaded under Period 5. You are required to do the same pre-writing assignment as before. :) H

Today was our first in class DBQ. The grade for this will go on the First Quarter! Don't forget that Chapter 14 is due Monday. Also, if you were out during the PSAT testing and didn't pick up the maps you missed, you can find them HERE.
H Today we took a deeper look at antebellum slavery in America through a couple of different types of historical records. We examined a primary source about the society and economy of the South called "Rise of the Cotton Kingdom" in DocBlock. We then analyzed historical data on slavery and slave life, followed by an examination of some Slave Narratives. You also got to look at your LEQ's briefly. If you have further questions or want to spend a little more time looking it over, you can do that during tutorial time or schedule an appointment with me.
Tomorrow is the first DBQ. You will have 10 minutes plan and prep time followed by 40 minutes writing time. Focus your content review tonight on Period 4 events and processes. H Many of you were out for PSAT testing today, but what you have to make up is not that bad. When you come to class tomorrow, you will need to pick up a map activity (due Monday) and a Thesis practice sheet for your Writer's Block. You will also need to do a DocBlock (HAPP) over the excerpts from Civil Disobedience by Thoreau which is on the website under Period 5 DocBlock.
Don't forget, Chapter 12 is due tomorrow and you need to make you scored discussion online posts by MONDAY (moved from Friday). Also, as a head's up, your second scored discussion will be Thursday of next week. The reading selection is again by Howard Zinn and can be found under Period 5 activities at the top of the page. You will be required to do the same pre-writing as before. H Today was our first scored discussion. I think for the first one, you had some pretty insightful questions and conversations. I have opened up the discussion board for the online portion of the discussion. HERE IS THE LINK. The directions for the online portion are on the discussion page. You will have until Friday, 10/20/16 at midnight to make your online posts. I recommend you make your initial post then wait at least a day for everyone else to have made their initial posts before trying to make you required responses. For Mr. Hutchison's classes, the following students did not reach the required points. Posted by your student ID is the number of points you need to make up online.

We then interpreted and discussed the image "American Progress" by John Gast as an example of the justifications for the policies of Manifest Destiny . We then read the editorial by O'Sullivan which coined the term Manifest Destiny and answered some questions over the document and image in DocBlock. We next spent time discussing DBQ essays and used the document from the beginning of class as a brief practice exercise. We then wrapped up class with Unit 4 theme teams. I'm attaching the posters from Hutchison's classes below as well as in the normal Google Folder. Tomorrow is your first Scored Discussion. Make sure you are prepared to share and that you have completed your pre-write response which you should print and bring to class! H
Hutchison was out today, but work continued as you spent time examining a couple of documents related to the Nat Turner work you did last night. You then worked in Lit Circles analyzing a set of documents dealing with issues around the antebellum reform movements.
Don't forget the Scored Discussion reading and pre-write for Tuesday and Chapter 11 is due Monday! H Today we started with a Quiz on Chapter 13. We then proceeded to complete a DocBlock from a document by Charles Grandison Finney and a related DBQ exercise. We also took some content block notes on Reform movements that were not discussed in the textbook, including Education, Prison and Mental health reforms.
Homework tonight is to complete the Nat Turner Webquest found under Period 4 activities (#8). Also, next Monday Chapter 11 is due and next Tuesday will be your first Scored Discussion. the reading for that discussion is under period 4 as well as the directions for your pre-writing assignment, an imperfect sample of a pre-writing paper, and the rubric for scoring the in class discussion. H PreACT Testing had our schedule shifted today and Mr. Hutchison out of class giving the test. In class, however, it was business as usual with a thesis rewriting activity starting the class, followed by a periodzation activity where you coupled two historical events by identifying a series of cause and effect links. After that, you analyzed a series of political cartoons about issues that arose during the Jackson administration.
Don't forget Chapter 13 is due tomorrow! H Today we recovered from our storm day off Monday be diving deeply into analysis of documents related to the Indian Removal act. We also discussed your reading assignment from the storm day. Don't forget, chapter 13 is due Thursday!
