I was out today, so my classes worked their way through stations about some less often discussed aspects of the Civil War and completed a DocBlock over a letter by Maj. Sullivan Ballou written near the beginning of the war.
Tomorrow is the PSAT exam and many of you will be out testing. Don't forget, we have moved Chapter 16 to be due THURSDAY and the exam will now be MONDAY! H

Today we dove into the causes of the Civil War through a step by step, document based argument. We did a Lit Circle analysis of documents representing an array of points of view on slavery from before the Civil War in our DocBlock, followed by an examination of a Republican campaign poster and platform for the 1860 election and of excerpts from various statements of secession issued by the states that voted to leave the Union at the beginning of the Civil War. We ended the day by discussing why there are persistent misunderstandings about the causes of the war by examining some documents about John Brown as one feature of how America redefined its past in the late 1800's and early 1900's to support segregation and discrimination at that time.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE: We have moved Chapter 16 to THURSDAY, 10/12 and Exam 2 to MONDAY, 10/16!!! Since so many will be out taking the PSAT on Wednesday, we needed to make this shift. H Today was the first in-class LEQ and it seemed to go pretty smoothly! The LEQ 1 window will remain open over the next two Fridays so expect to be doing more writing!
Don't forget to finish up your Chapter 15 notes this weekend as they are due Monday! H Great first scored discussion today!!! You can find the board for the follow up online discussion by clicking the "Discussion Boards" tile on the main page of the website or by following THIS LINK. The specific directions and requirements are posted on the board.
Tomorrow is your first in class, timed LEQ essay! Review the writing tips and instructions tonight to prepare. Expect the question to be drawn from topics we have discussed in the last two weeks. H Today we focused on Westward Expansion or Manifest Destiny as it played out prior to the Civil War. We examined the painting "American Progress" by John Gast as a statement of the expansionist point of view and for our DocBlock we analyzed the article by John L. O'Sullivan which originated the term Manifest Destiny. We finished up the day by looking at four different historical interpretation of the Mexican-American war. Don't forget to prepare for the scored discussion tomorrow which will continue the debate over the Mexican-American War from the point of view of Howard Zinn. All of the materials for the scored discussion are posted at the top of the Period 5 page and I am attaching the scoring rubric HERE. H
After a couple of days out, I was back with you today to discuss slavery and the ways historians collect and interpret historical data on slavery. After group debriefing Chapter 12, we looked at large scale data on slavery as a way of challenging the traditional image that large numbers of people in the south were slave owners and that most enslaved people lived and worked on large plantations that held many slaves.
After discussing our findings from the data, we turned to the more personal and individual side by reading and examining three different slave narratives. We discussed what historians can gather from slave narratives and the potential pitfalls while using this type of information as well. Tonight you need to finish any work from while I was gone and your Chapter 11 notes. You should also be working on the reading selection and pre-write for Thursday's scored discussion. You can find all of the documents you need for the discussion prep under Period 5 at the top of the webpage. H Hey folks,
Mr. Richardson will be out Monday for Jury Duty and I may be out as well since my daughter is still not well. We have shifted a couple of Chapter due dates because of this. The Calendar has been updated to reflect these changes, but I'm posting here as well just in case. (For Hutchison's classes, if the sub remembered to tell you to do the Nat Turner Webquest, I will not collect those until Tuesday.) NEW DATES:
