Today we started a more in-depth exploration of the nature and role of slavery in the United States prior to the Civil War. We started with some historical data which we analyzed and from which we drew some inferences. We also discussed how proponents of slavery used some of the information reflected in that data in their defenses of the institution. We next moved on to a document intensive exercise, using some antebellum slave narratives to help us put the data into historical perspective.
We will finish up our discussions on what these two sets of information tell us about the nature of American slavery tomorrow before diving into an examination of the political connections to slavery. Make sure you have finished your Chapter 14 notes and that you have completed the HAPP analysis over the Frederick Douglass reading posted under Period 5 as they will both be topics of discussion tomorrow! So, after a few storm days off, we hit the ground running today with our first scored discussion. Today's topic was the Mexican American War and for a first discussion, things went pretty well. You now need to finish up the discussion with you online participation.
NOTE: The edits I made to the website during 4th period today apparently did not save and publish. If you already posted to the discussion board, you were posting to last Spring's board. I tried to transfer over the new comments, but was only able to save a few of them. Check the board, and if your comment is now missing, you will need to re-post it. There are lots of chapters due very quickly over the next few weeks, including Chapter 14 on Wednesday. All of the dates on the class calendar have now been updated to reflect the changes we needed to make after the most recent storm days off school. Make sure you have a plan to keep up! H UPDATE 2 (10/12/18): Ok, Monday! I meant to say Monday I guess! Your scored discussion will now be in class on Monday. We have had a lot of questions this year for some reason, so let me take a second to try and clarify:
We will post all other changes to the class calendar by tomorrow. Make sure you are checking for shifted due dates! Again, email with questions. Hope everyone weathered the storm ok! See you Monday! --------- UPDATE: Well it seems another hurricane wants us to stay indoors! School is cancelled for tomorrow, so your scored discussion will now be on FRIDAY. Your exam next Thursday has shifted to next Friday and your LEQ from next Friday to the Monday following. We will post other shifts in due dates on the class calendar tomorrow. Stay safe tomorrow! --------- Today was PSAT day so we had the majority of students out for that exam. In class, the remainder of you viewed a documentary on the Gold Rush in California and worked on your prep for tomorrow's scored discussion. Make sure you have your pre-write complete and that you have prepared a few good, thought provoking questions to bring to the conversation. H Today we started our conversation about Manifest Destiny and the early incursions into the Great Plains and the Far West prior to the Civil War. We started with an image analysis of the painting "American Progress" by John Gast, followed by a DocBlock HAPP over "Manifest Destiny" by John L. O'Sullivan.
We ended today by analyzing and comparing the points of view of four different historians on the topic of the Mexican-American War. You should use the four differing perspectives as well as the historiographical essay we distributed to help as you prepare for Thursday's scored discussion. H Just a quick note before I dive into what we did today... Some things are shifting a bit on the class calendar, this may happen from time to time. The shifts ALWAYS work in your favor, but you should consult the calendar to be sure you are aware of any changes. The big changes that we decided this weekend is that your third in-class LEQ will NOT be this Friday, but will instead be NEXT Friday.
Today we first talked a bit about elections in the mid 1800's based on your reading over the weekend. We followed this up with some more in-depth conversation about antebellum immigration. You did an HAPP over the platform of the Know-Nothing Party and also used some historical sources to develop and support a position on the "whiteness" of Irish immigrants in the 1840's and 1850's. We finished the day with a bit of a thought exercise using the concept of "six degrees of separation" with historical events. Tonight you need to finish uo reading the rest of Chapter 11 and also be preparing fro Thursday's in-class scored discussion. H So you wrote your second in-class LEQ today! We will get straight to grading those and do our best to have detailed feedback next Thursday for you to take into your final LEQ next Friday! This weekend you need to tackle a few things. First of all, Chapter 12 is due Monday and Chapter 11, sections 11.2-11.5 are due on Tuesday. You also need to read the attached article by historian Jill Lepore discussing the nature of that expanding democracy we discussed this past week. We will also tackle a discussion over that on Monday. Tha last item you need to begin working on is the reading and pre-write for your first scored discussion, which will be next Thursday. The reading selection is posted under Period 5, as are the directions for the pre-write, a student sample, and the standards we will use to score your participation in the discussion. We will be explaining more next week, but let us know if you have questions. One last item: We want to welcome our new APUSH team member, Mr. Degermanjian who joined us today replacing Mr. Greenblatt who moved back to Michigan earlier this year! We are excited to have Mr. Degermanjian with us! His classes may pursue a slightly different schedule the next little bit as he gets you back on track, so some of the info in the blog regarding what we did each day may differ slightly for his classes for a bit. H
Today we continued our discussion of the early to mid 1800's with an exploration of the causes and effects of transcendentalism and the Second Great Awakening. We completed a Docblock Recitation over a document by Charles Finney then analyzed and discussed the meaning of some data on the emerging new economy and society of the market revolution. We ended with a lit circle activity where we examined four different documents representing four different reform issues from the time period.
Tomorrow is your second in-class LEQ essay! There is a different question each class period, but all will be drawn from the topics we have addressed this week. H Today we finished up the last thoughts about yesterday's Indian Removal Editorials analysis then proceeded to do some historiographical comparisons of four different historian's points of view on Andrew Jackson and the expansion of democracy. We also viewed a short video selection featuring some historian's debating the role of slavery in Jackson's America which included two of the historians we had read: Robert Remini and Daniel Feller; and a firey response from UNC's own Harry Watson.
Remember that Chapter 9 is due tomorrow and we will begin working with the material covered in that chapter first thing. H PS - I added a "Marshall Court" document to the powerpoint section of period 4 for your perusal. Some interesting conversations today as we first analyzed some political cartoons related to Jackson's Presidency, then moved on to discussing and analyzing Indian removal with an extended look at some newspaper editorials. We will conclude our conversation over the editorials first thing tomorrow. Also, don't forget that Chapter 13 notes are due tomorrow. Have a great evening!
H We started off the day today with the Chapter 10 Quiz, then followed that up with a discussion over the War of 1812, including its causes, a debrief of your Indiana Territory homework, and its outcomes, including the Era of Good Feelings. We also did a DOcBlock Recitation HAPP over the Monroe Doctrine and Mr. Richardson's classes spent a bit more time focusing on the Marshall Court.
Tonight, please read the selection "Natives and Strangers on Indian Relations" found under Period 4. Chapter 13 is Due Wednesday and Chapter 9 on Thursday. It appears the 4th period students in what was Mr. Greenblatt's class will have their new teacher with them on Friday! H |
