We checked the Chapter 19 notes today then took about half of the class to discuss the Howard Zinn selection on Gilded Age Business and Labor. Keep these concepts in mind over the next week or so as we continue discussing labor issues in the US.
We also took the last part of class to examine a document and rehearse DBQ skills for tomorrow. The next two weeks will be PACKED!!! Make a plan now for how you will proceed so you don't get overwhelmed or behind! H After taking the Chapter 18 quiz today, we completed a new style DocBlock analysis of Social Darwinism by William Graham Sumner. We ended class by analyzing some images by Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine exposing the conditions in cities and factories during the Gilded Age.
Tomorrow is the mini-discussion over the reading selection by Howard Zinn. No pre-write is required, but be prepared to ask questions and discuss! H Today we explored the issues that were facing farmers in the last 1800's and their attempts to address those issues, including the rise and fall of the Populist Party. We also introduced a new process for DocBlock while examining excerpts from speeches by Mary Elizabeth Lease and William Jennings Bryan.
don't forget Chapter 18 is due tomorrow and the reading selection for the mini-discussion on Thursday is also loaded under period 6! H Scored discussion over the issue of genocide and Native Americans during westward expansion today. The online discussion board for this topic will close this Sunday at midnight as usual!
Don't forget the mini discussion on Thursday (the reading is under period 6) and Chapter 18 is due Wednesday! Hutchison's 2nd period class: We will be going to the computer lab during part of class tomorrow for you to complete course registration! Remember to have your class choices ready and make sure you can log in to PowerSchool! H We took out first DBQ today. This one will be used only as practice, not a grade! After writing the essay, you highlighted, annotated and critiqued a partner's essay and then did a little self reflection on your own writing based on the feedback you received.
Don't forget to finish up your prep for Monday's scored discussion! I think this topic should generate some healthy discussion and academic disagreement! H We discussed writing the DBQ some more today, focusing on how to analyze a document and link that analysis as evidence in a historical argument. We then spent the rest of class looking at a set of documents related to a historical mystery from Helena, Montana in 1870. Your task was to use all of the documents to extract information related to the murder of John R. Bitzer and the subsequent vigilante lynching of his accused killer Ah Chow then use that evidence to construct a plausible historical recreation of the events.
Tomorrow is your first PRACTICE DBQ. Also, don't forget your next scored discussion is Monday! Be getting those readings and the pre-write completed! H The second of four exams for the course was today covering material from Chapters 8-16, Periods 4 & 5. Tomorrow we will venture into Period 6! We are now PAST halfway through the course on our way to the AP Exam!
Don't forget to be working on your readings and pre-write for Monday's next scored discussion. I expect this topic will generate some interesting discussion! Also, don't forget that chapter 17 is due tomorrow and Chapter 18 next Wednesday. The next few weeks coming up to Spring Break are increasingly packed, so start planning now so you don't get overwhelmed later on! H Today we evaluated a series of documents, first from Abraham Lincoln, then from various voices during the Reconsrtuction, in an effort to develop arguments answering essential historical questions. We also took some time to explore the techniques associated with writing the DBQ essay. You will find more information on writing DBQ's under the "APUSH Exam Review-Writing Tips" page on this site. We will continue our discussion Monday befreo writing a practice DBQ this Friday!
