After our brief break due to storms, we started out today with the Chapter 4 quiz. After the quiz we examined some documents related to the Enlightenment and Great Awakening and discussed their effects on Colonial America. We also talked about writing thesis statements and you were assigned your practice essay question in response to which you should write a rough draft thesis statement tonight and post it on the appropriate board for your class by clicking the "Discussion Boards" tile on the main page.
Below I'm posting the construction example we used in class today and a small infographic on active and passive voice. Also, don't forget that Chapter 5 is due tomorrow. -H My dear students,
I am genuinely sorry to miss you today. I have been sick all weekend and don't want to get y'all sick, too. In class today, please complete the following: 20 minutes Ch 4 quiz 20 minutes Colonial Data and Maps questions 30 minutes compare and contrast the Enlightenment with the Great Awakening Finally, answer this question using complete sentences for each sub part. •Answer parts a, b, & c below: •A: assess the extent to which the Enlightenment affected Colonial American society. •B: assess the extent to which the Great Awakening affected Colonial American society •C: Explain how one or both movements contributed to the development of the separation of church and state in America This is the format that your free response questions on class exams and the AP exam SAQ will be. Be prepared to discuss tomorrow. Thanks for you patience and I trust you to do good work in my absence! So I finally have both power and internet connectivity back... sorry for the delay in posting! We got out early on Thursday due to the impending storms, which then led to school being cancelled on Friday. The district has decided to use banked days for the makeup, so we have now lost a day in the already tight Spring semester calendar. Here's the plan:
-H Today we evaluated the labor systems that developed in colonial North America in terms of their human and societal costs. We started out by debriefing the Jamestown activity from the end of the day yesterday and the podcast you listened to last night. We next did a DocBlock HAPP analysis and interpretation over our first secondary source, The Middle Passage by Mannix and Cowley. We finished up the day analyzing a set of advertisements for runaway slaves and servants in colonial newspapers in the 1700's.
Tonight, you need to respond to the following question in 1-2 paragraphs, citing evidence from the advertisements: In what ways and to what degree did the institutions of servitude and slavery in colonial America differ from one another. I've included the sample response to the Jamestown activity we examined in class below for your reference as you write. Also, don't forget that Chapter 4 notes are due Friday! -H
Today we shifted our focus to concentrate on the English colonization of North America. We started out with a brief discussion reviewing the HAPP of the Richard Hakluyt document from yesterday, then proceeded to analyze and interpret a couple of passenger lists from voyages to different American colonies in 1635. We then took our "big picture" inferences and checked them against a representative personal experience in the form of a DocBlock HAPP analysis of a Letter from an Indentured Servant by Richard Frethorne. We ended the day examining a small selection of primary sources and data to bridge the gap between our first two exercises.
I'm posting the question you should answer using that last set of sources (Doing History with Jamestown Documents, under Period 2 on the website) in case you did not finish up in class. Also tonight, you need to listen to the podcast on the Great Dismal Swamp found under Period 2 (#5 at the top). For those of you in 2nd period, I am also posting below the video directions on creating your Digital Portfolio website. I'll check off that you have these created and published tomorrow during class. -H Today we started out with a debrief of your Chapter 3 notes, then we discussed the early conquest and colonization of the Americas by the European nations which were newly forming in the late 1400's. We also debriefed your AHPP analysts of the document by Bartolome de las Casas and then began another analysis over a document by Richard Hakluyt. Be sure to finish up the HAPP of that document tonight and be prepared to discuss tomorrow. You can find a copy of the document under Period 2 of this website, under the heading "Document Recitation Block Files."
