Today we dove into the causes of the Civil War through a step by step, document based argument.  We did a Lit Circle analysis of documents representing an array of points of view on slavery from before the Civil War in our DocBlock, followed by an examination of a Republican campaign poster and platform for the 1860 election and of excerpts from various statements of secession issued by the states that voted to leave the Union at the beginning of the Civil War.  We ended the day by discussing why there are persistent misunderstandings about the causes of the war by examining some documents about John Brown as one feature of how America redefined its past in the late 1800's and early 1900's to support segregation and discrimination at that time.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE:  We have moved Chapter 16 to THURSDAY, 10/12 and Exam 2 to MONDAY, 10/16!!!  Since so many will be out taking the PSAT on Wednesday, we needed to make this shift.

The Civil War was fought over state's rights, not slavery :^D
