Today we had our last scored discussion of the year! The discussion board is now up and open and you have until next Thursday to make your posts.
Monday is our final DBQ of the year and under the Period 7 activities you will find a link to the DBQ PowerPoint and to some practice exercises to help you prepare for Monday! H We started looking at the Great Depression today with some introductory notes and discussion on the background, causes, and early events of the Depression. We then examined two of Roosevelt's Fireside Chat broadcasts and finished up analyzing some letters to the president written after each of the broadcasts.
We will continue the examination of the Great Depression tomorrow with our 5th Scored Discussion followed by a SkillBlock with some political cartoons. Don't forget to come prepared for tomorrow's discussion with your pre-discussion written reflection! H Today we covered a variety of historical events and issues, all centered around the ongoing American debate over the freedom of expression in a free society. We looked at some court cases from WWI related to the Sedition act and possible implications for modern America and the future. We then examined some of the major developments and themes of the tumultuous 1920's, culminating with an examination of the issues surrounding the Scopes trial.
Don't forget the next scored discussion is this Friday! The reading selection is posted under Period 7 documents. Also, we made the decision today to move the exam from Monday to Tuesday of next week to give us one more day on the Great Depression and New Deal. You're welcome ;) H Today we continued our discussion over WWI in America. We examined some documents reflecting both the soldier's experience in the war and the public opinion which emerged about the futility and horrors of war. We then discussed American involvement in the war and finished up looking at some of the wartime propaganda designed to engender support for the war and encourage participation in wartime conservation and support activities.
We didn't have time to look at sedition in the war, so tonight for homework you need to read THIS EXCERPT and be prepared to apply these laws to a few case studies in class first thing tomorrow. Don't forget your next scored discussion is this Friday and the reading selection (from Zinn, again) is posted under Period 7 activities! H Today we did our second full LEQ! I'll have those graded the end of next week. We also did our 4th scored discussion and we had some good clash in both periods. I'm attaching the list of in-class participation scores so you can see if you need to contribute more times to the online discussion by next Thursday to make up in-class points. Today we examined a set of primary sources representing the diversity of political and social opinion in the Gilded Age. We then spent a few minutes reviewing thesis statements and essay writing tips. Tomorrow is your second LEQ. You might want to refresh your memory on the difference between internal migrants and immigrants after the Civil War ;)
Also tomorrow we will have our 4th scored discussion following the essay! Make sure you have done the pre-writing over the reading from Lies my Teacher Told Me by James Loewen! H Today we talked about labor issues in the Second Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age. We focused on some problems faced by the laboring classes and the union response that developed. we also examined the associations of the new political movements of Socialism, Communism, and Anarchism with the union movements of the time and examined some documents relating the the Haymarket Riots in 1887.
The last few minutes of class were dedicated to critiquing and rewriting some sample thesis statements. The samples can be found HERE so you can finish your rewrites if you didn't do so during class. Bring your rewrites to class tomorrow ready to discuss! Don't forget Friday will be your next In-Class LEQ essay followed by your 4th Scored Discussion, this one over the selection by James Loewen on Labor history in textbooks. Tomorrow is the last day for online comments on Scored discussion #3, Ned Blackhawk. H Today we explored some of the changes in America's economy and industry in the Gilded Age. We took a few minutes to rehearse historical skills in interpreting charts and graphs and to talk about some common problems in AP English and APUSH essays this year as well as some of the specific differences in writing style we have identified as departments.
Don't forget the online comments for the previous scored discussion are due by Thursday and the reading for our next scored discussion this Friday can be found in the Period 6 activities! H Today we took Quiz 7 over chapters 22-24 then talked about agrarian concerns in the West and South and the rise and fall of the People's Party. Homework for tonight, due Wednesday, is to complete the Great Strikes chart under Period 6 activities using the five strikes essays also posted there.
Don't forget you will have your next in-class essay this Friday! we will be reviewing some skills in class, but you might want to go back over your notes and the PowerPoints posted under the "Writing Skills" section of the "APUSH Exam Review" tab above. Also on Friday will be your 4th scored discussion after the Quiz. You can find the reading for the essay under Period 6 activities as well! H |
