Exam 2 was today! We are now officially halfway through the "content" of the class! That means you have technically completed the time period you would have in one semester of college. We will dive into the second half tomorrow as we begin our examination of Westward Expansion during and following the civil War. Make sure that you have Chapter 17 completed for tomorrow.
Also, don't forget that your next scored discussion will be on Wednesday and you need to have a pre-write completed once again. Make sure you check the pre-write directions posted with the readings under Period 6 as they are slightly different this time. As a matter of fact, you should double check the class calendar for the next couple of weeks, because it's pretty tightly scheduled with chapter readings. H

Today we wrapped up Period 5 with a discussion over Reconstruction. We debriefed your thoughts coming out of your textbook reading then compared that to four major historiographical schools of thought using a brief essay by historian Alan Brinkley. We next wrestled with the question of freedom for African Americans during Reconstruction through an analysis of a set of documents. We finished the day with a DocBlock Lit Circle over the "Voices of Reconstruction," which you can find under Period 5 on this website if you did not finish in class. Monday is your second exam. It will cover Period 4 & 5, 1800-1877, Chapters 8-16. As last time, it will be 45 multiple choice questions followed by 2 short answers. I have posted the list of class activities, DocBlock's and textbook chapters you should have in your binders from these two units. H
Today we explored the causes of the Civil War with an analysis of secession ordinances from four different Southern states and with a debrief of your Chapter 15 reading. We also spent a good chunk of time analyzing some of Lincoln's public and private communications on the issues of disunion and slavery.
Tomorrow we will tackle the aftermath of the Civil War and Reconstruction as we wrap things up for Period 5 headed into your second exam! Make sure you have finished up Chapter 16 tonight! H Today we continued our discussion over slavery, shifting our focus a bit to see how people in the antebellum period decried and defended slavery and the political repercussions of those debates. We looked at a brief document comparing two accounts of a speech given by Sojourner Truth, followed by a DocBlock Lit Circle over four primary sources illustrating the variety of points of view on slavery prevalent during the time (Uncle Tom's Cabin, Rise of the Cotton Kingdom, The Blessings of Slavery, and Impending Crisis of the South). We ended with a brief look at the Republican Party and its platform during its first two presidential campaigns in its existence, 1856 and 1860.
Chapter 15 is due tomorrow and Chapter 16 on Friday. Your next exam is Monday and your next Scored Discussion is next Wednesday (readings are posted under Period 6). Tomorrow we will tackle the causes of the Civil War. If we have time at the end of class, we will try to answer your biggest remaining questions about Chapters 14 & 15. H Today we started a more in-depth exploration of the nature and role of slavery in the United States prior to the Civil War. We started with some historical data which we analyzed and from which we drew some inferences. We also discussed how proponents of slavery used some of the information reflected in that data in their defenses of the institution. We next moved on to a document intensive exercise, using some antebellum slave narratives to help us put the data into historical perspective.
We will finish up our discussions on what these two sets of information tell us about the nature of American slavery tomorrow before diving into an examination of the political connections to slavery. Make sure you have finished your Chapter 14 notes and that you have completed the HAPP analysis over the Frederick Douglass reading posted under Period 5 as they will both be topics of discussion tomorrow! H So, after a few storm days off, we hit the ground running today with our first scored discussion. Today's topic was the Mexican American War and for a first discussion, things went pretty well. You now need to finish up the discussion with you online participation.
NOTE: The edits I made to the website during 4th period today apparently did not save and publish. If you already posted to the discussion board, you were posting to last Spring's board. I tried to transfer over the new comments, but was only able to save a few of them. Check the board, and if your comment is now missing, you will need to re-post it. There are lots of chapters due very quickly over the next few weeks, including Chapter 14 on Wednesday. All of the dates on the class calendar have now been updated to reflect the changes we needed to make after the most recent storm days off school. Make sure you have a plan to keep up! H UPDATE 2 (10/12/18): Ok, Monday! I meant to say Monday I guess! Your scored discussion will now be in class on Monday. We have had a lot of questions this year for some reason, so let me take a second to try and clarify:
We will post all other changes to the class calendar by tomorrow. Make sure you are checking for shifted due dates! Again, email with questions. Hope everyone weathered the storm ok! See you Monday! --------- UPDATE: Well it seems another hurricane wants us to stay indoors! School is cancelled for tomorrow, so your scored discussion will now be on FRIDAY. Your exam next Thursday has shifted to next Friday and your LEQ from next Friday to the Monday following. We will post other shifts in due dates on the class calendar tomorrow. Stay safe tomorrow! --------- Today was PSAT day so we had the majority of students out for that exam. In class, the remainder of you viewed a documentary on the Gold Rush in California and worked on your prep for tomorrow's scored discussion. Make sure you have your pre-write complete and that you have prepared a few good, thought provoking questions to bring to the conversation. H Today we started our conversation about Manifest Destiny and the early incursions into the Great Plains and the Far West prior to the Civil War. We started with an image analysis of the painting "American Progress" by John Gast, followed by a DocBlock HAPP over "Manifest Destiny" by John L. O'Sullivan.
We ended today by analyzing and comparing the points of view of four different historians on the topic of the Mexican-American War. You should use the four differing perspectives as well as the historiographical essay we distributed to help as you prepare for Thursday's scored discussion. H Just a quick note before I dive into what we did today... Some things are shifting a bit on the class calendar, this may happen from time to time. The shifts ALWAYS work in your favor, but you should consult the calendar to be sure you are aware of any changes. The big changes that we decided this weekend is that your third in-class LEQ will NOT be this Friday, but will instead be NEXT Friday.
Today we first talked a bit about elections in the mid 1800's based on your reading over the weekend. We followed this up with some more in-depth conversation about antebellum immigration. You did an HAPP over the platform of the Know-Nothing Party and also used some historical sources to develop and support a position on the "whiteness" of Irish immigrants in the 1840's and 1850's. We finished the day with a bit of a thought exercise using the concept of "six degrees of separation" with historical events. Tonight you need to finish uo reading the rest of Chapter 11 and also be preparing fro Thursday's in-class scored discussion. H So you wrote your second in-class LEQ today! We will get straight to grading those and do our best to have detailed feedback next Thursday for you to take into your final LEQ next Friday! This weekend you need to tackle a few things. First of all, Chapter 12 is due Monday and Chapter 11, sections 11.2-11.5 are due on Tuesday. You also need to read the attached article by historian Jill Lepore discussing the nature of that expanding democracy we discussed this past week. We will also tackle a discussion over that on Monday. Tha last item you need to begin working on is the reading and pre-write for your first scored discussion, which will be next Thursday. The reading selection is posted under Period 5, as are the directions for the pre-write, a student sample, and the standards we will use to score your participation in the discussion. We will be explaining more next week, but let us know if you have questions. One last item: We want to welcome our new APUSH team member, Mr. Degermanjian who joined us today replacing Mr. Greenblatt who moved back to Michigan earlier this year! We are excited to have Mr. Degermanjian with us! His classes may pursue a slightly different schedule the next little bit as he gets you back on track, so some of the info in the blog regarding what we did each day may differ slightly for his classes for a bit.
