Today we finished up the summer assessment activity then proceeded to discuss the Pre-Columbian American peopling of the US and used a societies activity to unpack some of the early Native American - European contact and conflicts.  We will continue our exploration of these topics tomorrow and Monday, but for tonight, I want you to continue evaluating the textbook treatment of the Pre-Columbian peopling of the Americas by reading the attached textbook excerpts.  Comment in the comments below answering the questions below based on what you have read and learned to date.

· Which accounts most closely resemble the account from the American Pageant?
· Which accounts most closely resemble the accounts from the current research you read in class?
· Which accounts report other explanations of the peopling of America from outside the field of History?
· Which account do you think is the most accurate and reliable? Why?
· Which account do you think is the most readable and effective? Why?

Don't forget Chapter 2 notes are due tomorrow as are your binder and your student information sheet/honor code acknowledgement form!  If we don't have school tomorrow, check back here for further instructions!

· (Which accounts most closely resemble the account from the American Pageant?)

The accounts that I think are most similar to what is in our textbook, are the ones from "Experience History" and "Give Me Liberty". This is because these are the two examples that focus the most on the land bridge, and the least on boat travel.

· (Which accounts most closely resemble the accounts from the current research you read in class?)

The most up-to-date sounding accounts are the ones from "American History", "America's History" and "By the People". This is due to the fact that they focus heavily on the difference between what scholars used to think (the idea that the land bridge was the only way people crossed), and what we now know based on recent scientific evidence (Travel by boat and multiple waves).

· (Which accounts report other explanations of the peopling of America from outside the field of History?)

Every account at least briefly mentions migration by boat or other means, however "American History", "America's History" and "By the People" offer the most detailed descriptions of the alternate explanations.

· (Which account do you think is the most accurate and reliable? Why?)
The account that struck me as the most reliable is the excerpt from "By the People" because of its in-depth explanation of the discoveries that led to the new theories that have arisen. It was a close call between that, and the account from "American History", but in the end I felt like "By the People" had more evidence to back up its claims.

· (Which account do you think is the most readable and effective? Why?)

The least readable of the accounts was definitely the one from "America's History". It was hard to follow and didn't give enough supporting evidence. On the other hand, the most readable account was the one from "Experience History", because of its varied sentence length and pacing. It was the least choppy sounding out of all the accounts.

1."Give Me Liberty" and "American History" to me related the most the the textbook because they talked about the land bridge theory.
2. The account that related to the newer data we discused in class was "By the People".
3. "American History" explains the alternative explanations in the most detail.
4. "American History" seems to be the most accurate and reliable because it talked about many of the theories and gave the most information.
5. The most readable account was definately from "Experience History", this is because the sentence structures varied and was easy to read and understand.

American Pageant” suggests that early people may have come to the Americas in crude boats, or across the Bering. “American History” Is the most similar account to the articles we read in class as it refers to the DNA evidence, the archaeological evidence, the boat theory, and the land bridge theory. “Give Me Liberty” also refers to the land bridge as well as a more recent discovery of the boats theory. “By The People” speaks of the arrow heads we read about in class and about the land bridge theory. “America’s History” speaks only of the land bridge.

The most accurate and reliable account is “America’s History” as it only includes the widely accepted land bridge theory and does not include the more recent not yet fully proven theories.
The most readable and effective account is probably the “American History” book because it shows many of the newer theories and still includes the more widely accepted theory of the land bridge.

1. Give Me Liberty: An American History
2. By The People, A History of the United States
3. Experience History: Interpreting America's Past
4. Considering they are all text-books they seem pretty accurate/reliable. The thing that would change that is their publishing date/when they were last changed because we might have found more information since these books where written.
5. I think the one that was most readable/effective was "America's History" (8th editing), because the way it was set up and how it was written made it easy to follow along.

1. America's History
2.American History
3.Experience History
4.I believe Experience History is the most accurate because it combines the ideas of people coming to America by boat and across land bridges. Also, it adds more descriptive detail on how and what the migrants were like in the journey to the Americas.
5.I believe America's History was the most readable and effective because it agreed with our textbook and gave the general idea of how migrants came to the Americas.

The accounts from “Experience History” and “Give Me Liberty” are the most closely related to the one from the American Pageant. Both textbooks discuss the theory of a land bridge. “By the People” not only discusses the possibility of the land bridge mentioned in American Pageant, but also the anthropological evidence that suggests earlier arrival to North America. “American History” also covers the topic of DNA evidence from other migrants discussed in class.

Although “Give Me Liberty” claims to be an updated 2014 edition, the excerpts we are given does not seem to discuss any alternative theories or possibilities, which could mean it is not the most accurate. In contrast, “American History” does given another possibility to the ice bridge theory and mentions recent evidence (however, we are not given any context to how “recent” that evidence is). Regardless, “American History” discusses both the ice bridge and the DNA evidence as theories, and therefore appears to be the most accurate and reliable.

In addition to being the most accurate and reliable, I found “American History” to also be the most readable and effective. It gives you a clear overview of the counter-argument most archaeologists presented and also gives a description of a new theory. Also, the author does not establish anything as definitive, which makes it effective in the way it gets the reader to gasp that the theories are by no means the only plausible explanation.

1. The one that resembles the account from our textbook most closely is American History, because not only does it mention the land bridge, but also suggests almost the exact same time period to for when the migration happened (11,000 years ago). However, this account also talks about newer evidence, which our textbook does not discuss.

2. The more current accounts that resemble the research we read in class are those from Give Me Liberty, By The People, and America's History. These accounts all consider different ways that the people could have reached America other than by crossing the bridge during the Ice Age. Give Me Liberty suggests travel by boat, By The People talks about new anthropological evidence that suggests different ideas, and America's History describes the different waves of migration.

3. All the textbooks stick pretty closely to the field of history. Most of them rely on historical evidence for their suggested theories, and not much outside the field of History.

4. I like the American History account, because it talks about different theories, including the land bridge and the newer evidence that suggests voyage by sea. These different perspectives makes it sound more reliable because it's allowing us to consider multiple points of view. Similarly, the By the People textbook considers different theories, talking about the Clovis people and how new evidence altered what anthropologists believed.

5. The one I found the most readable was America's History. It provided a clear theory of how and when the waves of migration happened, using simple terms and sentences that are easy to understand.

1. The accounts from Give Me Liberty and American History most closely resemble the account from the American Pageant because they mainly focus on the idea of the land bridge going through the Bering Strait.

2. By the People most closely resembles the accounts from class because it discusses more recent discoveries .

3. Experience History notes other evidence that isn't necessary in the field of history.

4 and 5: I believe account from American History is the most accurate and reliable and the most readable and effective because it delivers the information quickly and concisely while not ruling out the possibility of other theories.

2. "By The People" closely resembles the account from the current research I read in class. Both accounts talk about the Clovis people and how the first immigrants might have crossed the ocean to get to the Americas.
3. "By The People" and "American History" accounts report other explanations of the peopling of America from outside the field of history. They both include mean theories and ideas on how the first immigrants got to the Americas.
4.The account that is the most accurate and reliable is "American History". This account included theories and evidence to say whether it was correct or not. Some theories had DNA evidence to back its conclusion up.
5. The account that is the most readable and effective is the "American History". This account included many different theories that other people have made and had a counter argument to them. This account also included information that was easy to read and it was able to understand the different theories that people had.

1.The "American History" account and the "Give me Liberty" account resemble the accounts in the textbook because they both focus on the land bridge theory.
2. The best accounts that are similar to the research we read in class are from "Give Me Liberty" and "By The People". Both of these discuss the more reliable ways of how the nomads got to America. The first one "Give Me Liberty," talks about how they traveled by boat, while "By the People" talks about evidence that suggests different ways on how they got there.
3. Experience History shows theories that aren't too much related to history compared to the other accounts.
4. The "American History" account is the most accurate, this account has actual scientific evidence as well as theories to prove certain theories correct.
5. Same as above, the "American History" account is the most readable and effective because it included many different theories, and included and abundance of information that was easy to understand.

"American History" and "By the People" are two accounts that closely resembled American Pageant since it included both the Bering Land Bridge and the boat people.

"By the People" seems to be the most current research that resembles the accounts read in class, since it included archaeological data and had more recent information/ discoveries.

"Experience History" provides other explanations of the peopling of America from outside the field of History. It able to provide specific details, that are not prevalent to the field of History.

"American History" seems to be the most accurate and reliable account because it incorporated the significant theories and provided the most information.

"American History" was the most readable and effective account since it was able to provide all the information in a concise and chronological order that was clear to the reader.

· The account in America's History greatly resembles the accounts from American Pageant, as both focus solely on the idea of a land bridge connecting Asia and North America and allowing for the migration of people across. Give Me Liberty also has a strong focus on the idea of a land bridge.

· The accounts in By The People and American History both resemble the accounts read in class, as they mention the land bridge idea but also emphasize that new information has been discovered. These all imply that there are multiple groups of people who arrived at different times in America's distant past.

· American History describes how DNA testing has helped to create new theories about how people came to settle in America, which is based more in scientific discovery and not completely historical research.

· American History appears to be the most accurate and reliable account. This is because it is up-to-date on new information that questions previous theories and does not treat the speculation as fact. It also provides extended information on the "Archaic" period, providing greater depth into how people settled in America.

· Give Me Liberty is the most readable and effective, as it gives strong but concise statements throughout, such as firmly stating that American history began long before Europeans came into the picture. It provides the basic information needed to understand the concepts of early settlement, not drowning these ideas in copious detail.

2. The account that most closely resembled the current research I read in that class was By the People.
3. Experience History reported other explanations of the peopling of America made from outside the field of history.
4. I think the most accurate and reliable account was American History because it discussed the land bridge, and the account provided other explanations with archaeological evidence. The account also mentions the recent DNA evidence that suggests that there was another group of people that migrated from Europe or Africa.
5. The account that was the most readable and effective was American History because it provided clear, and concise theories on how the Native Americans came to America. The textbook also backs up these theories with evidence.

1. The accounts that most resemble the account from the American Pageant are American History and Give Me Liberty because these documents talked about how people arrived to the Americas by crossed the Bering Strait by using the land bridge which is similar to the American Pageant account.

2. The accounts that most closely resemble the accounts from current research read in class are By the People and American History. By the People discusses how archaeologists discovered evidence at sites, and American History gave theories besides the land bridge which included finding DNA evidence.

3. Experience History reports other explanations that are not pertaining to history. Its explanation is that the first Americans came in small boats.

4. The account that is most reliable and accurate is American History because it discusses more than one way the first Americans arrived. Some arrived by crossing the land bridge and others came a different way.

5.The account that is most readable and effective is American History because it was not firm on just one theory, multiple theories were given and they were not that long but detailed enough to fully understand.

1. The “American History” account closely resembles the account from the American Pageant because they both focus on the land bridge that may have been crossed. They also focus more on the geologically features of that area and the time it took place.
2. “America’s History” and “Give Me Liberty” most closely resemble the facts we read about in class because both accounts talk about the way they “created” food and created their daily living routines. It also talks about how the people expanded into different regions of the Americas.
3. “Experiencing History” wasn’t really related to history as much because it started to talk about the type of food that the people who settled in the Great Plains survived off of.
4. I think “American History” is more accurate and reliable because it talks about the initial land bridge theory while stating “This new evidence”. It also explains how that theory would be possible so it is backing up their point with examples in the different time periods.
5. “America’s History” is the most readable and effective because it is concise but also covers the material that is needed to be covered. It successfully explains how the people came to be in the Americas and how they were able to live here in the Americas.

1.) I believe that the textbook Experience History is most similar to the account that we read in the American Pageant. Both accounts focus on the migration of people across the Bering Land Bridge and the diffusion of those people around the continent.
2.) American History is most closely related to the modern research articles we read in class. The excerpt from this textbook focuses primarily on the recent knowledge acquired from scientific research to prove the theory that early Americans could have come to the continent in crude boats rather than just the land bridge.
3.) The accounts presented in American History, By the People, and America's History report evidence found outside of the field of History. The accounts about the peopling of the Americas include scientific evidence that is not confirmed in the field of History; for example, these textbooks provide research on the possibility of early peoples traveling to the Americas by boat.
4.) I believe that American History and By the People have the most reliable information. Both textbooks give accurate and in-depth information about the migration across the land bridge, but they also both give information about the recent discoveries and theories about the migration to America by boat. All claims, in both textbooks, are backed with evidence and go into great detail about the topic.
5.) I believe that American History was the most readable of the selected textbooks. The information was organized neatly and logically, which made it easy to follow. The information was also very thorough, presenting in-depth details about the claims and events that the chapter contained.

Give Me Liberty and America's History both are very similar to the textbook reading because all three of them talk about how people from Asia came to the Americas using a land bridge that led to Alaska.

American History has a similar account to the passage that my group got in class because both say that people came by boat from islands or from Asia.

All of the passages seemed to use evidence, so they all classify as history to me.

I would say that the most reliable theory is the land bridge theory because it is much more widely accepted than the others.

The most readable was American History because of its very organized passages and because it did not digress as much as the other books seemed to.

The account given in “American History” most closely resembles the account from the “American Pageant” because it focuses on the Land Bridge theory but also mentions the possibility of American Indians having arrived on boats.

The account given in “By the People” resembles the accounts from current research because it mentions anthropological evidence and new discoveries that raise questions about the arrival of American Indians to the continent. The account given in “American History” also resembles the accounts from current research because it includes DNA evidence that proves different groups may have migrated to the continent.

The accounts from “American History” and “Experience History” report other explanations of the peopling of America from outside the field of history including DNA and genetic evidence and science based explanations.

The account given in “American History” is the most accurate and reliable. This is because it used archaeological evidence and listed the date the evidence was found. In addition it mentioned “recent” DNA evidence and looks at multiple possibilities.

The account from “By the People” is the most readable and effective. This is because the sentence structure was easy to understand and it was well organized and had good transitions between ideas.

1.) The accounts from America's History and Give Me Liberty most closely resemble the account from the American Pageant because it talks mainly about the land bridge theory and the cultivation of maze.

2.) The account from American History most closely resemble the accounts from the current research because it talks about how there was also evidence that other people came to America by boat and not only the land bridge and that there may have been other waves of migration from Europe or Africa.

3.) American History reports other explanations of the peopling of America from outside the field of History. It talks about DNA evidence that shows that other groups of people had come to America.

4.) I think the American History is the most accurate and reliable because it talks about the many theories and provides evidence as to why archaeologists believe it to be true. It also uses recent scientific evidence to back up its claims.

5.) Give Me Liberty was the most readable and effective because it was short and got to the point.

"America's History" and "Give me Liberty" resemble the ideas of American Pageant because they revolve around the idea of Asian people crossing the bearing straight during the ice age to get to the Americas

"By the People" most closely resembles our in class research because it discussed recent artifact and bone discoveries, similar to the "Kennewick Man" discoveries.

"American History" talks about DNA discoveries that could lead to evidence proving other types of groups migrated to America

I thought "Experience History" was the most believable because they gave scientific evidence and provided exact dates

"American History" was the most readable because it gave you copious information on the subject as well as giving other possibilities causing the migration

1) The account from "America's History" closely relates to the account of "The American Pageant."
2) The account from "Experience History" closely relates to our research in class.
3) The account from "American History" explains other theories of peopling of Americas. It tells the theory of migrants arriving by boats.
4) "American History" is the most reliable and accurate account since it gives evidence by referring to DNA researches of the people and also gives time frames where the mass migration happened.
5) "American History" is also the most effective article because it gives information about the Siberian tribes that crossed the Bering Strait yet it tells of the possibilities of groups of other tribes travelling by boat to the Americas. Also this article also shows us how the Natives shaped up this continent by growing the crops and building large functional centers which helps us to understand the customs and values of those people.

1. American History and Give me Liberty most closely resemble American Pageant because they both aknowledge the land bridge theory where people came across a natural bridge connecting modern day Russia and Alaska.
