Today we talked about Imperialism and America taking a place on the world stage. We completed a set of stations which should go in your SkillBlock. We did not have time to get to the DocBlock over the Philippine War, so you will find that assignment attached below. This DocBlock is due Monday, as is Chapter 27! H

The topic of discussion today was the Progressive Era as we followed up on the various negative developments in American business and society during the Gilded Age and the expansion of the reform efforts of Muckrakers and others. We examined some varying points of view on achieving civil rights for African Americans that developed during the period during our DocBlock and practiced some DBQ skills in Writer's Block using those documents. Don't forget that Chapter 25 is due tomorrow! Attached you will find the theme Team posters for Period 6. H
Today we discussed immigration and urbanization in the late 1800's and the resulting urban problems and the rise of political machines. We also explored some primary sources from muckraker photographers Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine. Tomorrow we will continue talking about reform movements and reformers during this period and wrap up the major topics for Unit 6. Don't forget, Chapter 25 is due Friday!
H Today was my first day back after being gone a few days. We moved into the Gilded Age with a set of documents in a literature circle representing a variety of POV's, then proceeded with a brief Content Block on the major developments in the Second Industrial Revolution and business practices. Tonight, make sure you have finished the Great Strikes chart and file that in your SkillBlock. Keep on top of the Chapter readings as well, it's been a while since your last quiz so...
H I will be checking these next Friday, March 18.
Today we had our second scored discussion over historiographic issues related to the study, representation and teaching of Native american history across time. We had some pretty good discussions and extended the exercise into a discussion over the nature of historical inquiry. We finished up the day with a brief content block on the West. You should be reviewing your notes, etc. for Friday's exam! I will post the discussion scores later and open the online discussion board as well. You have until next Thursday to make your online comments! H
Today we explored some of the various issues associated with the American West through an analysis of primary sources from a particular event in 1870 in Helena, Montana. Groups analyzed a set of primary sources over the event to develop and defend a historical theory explaining what may have happened.
Don't forget to finish the reading and written reflection for tomorrow's scored discussion! H Today we wrapped up some material on Reconstruction and introduced our new unit on the West after the Civil War. Remember to use the pictures you took of Unit 4 and Unit 5 theme team posters to fill out a Unit Summary form for each Unit. Second Period, I am attaching your Unit 4 pictures to this post. Your next Scored discussion will be this Wednesday! The reading is SIGNIFICANTLY shorter this time. It is posted in period 6 and is called "Look how Far We've Come" by Ned Blackhawk. It is listed as Scored Discussion #3, but it will actually be your second discussion. H
Today was your first full DBQ! And you survived! I will have the grades on these before Spring Break. Monday we will wrap up a few Civil War & Reconstruction items then start discussing Westward expansion after the Civil War. Don't forget Chapters 21 & 22 are due Monday as well!
H Today we took quite a bit of time to discuss document analysis skills essential to constructing history and historical arguments. We specifically looked at applying these skills to the writing of a DBQ essay to prep for tomorrow's DBQ. We also looked at documents related to Reconstruction to discover some of the history of that period. We will return to the topic of Reconstruction briefly next week in class. The Rubric for tomorrow's DBQ can be found under APUSH Exam Review/Writing Tips. The DBQ is worth 50 points! I would review the two readings on Women's issues from Wednesday as well as any other documents and notes on this topic tonight. Good luck!
